Gum recession happens when the soft tissue around a tooth pulls back, leaving the root surface exposed. Beyond the longer, uneven look it gives your smile, this exposes the root to sensitivity, decay, and progressive bone loss that can eventually threaten the tooth itself. A gum recession graft surgically rebuilds that lost tissue, covering the exposed root, re-establishing a healthy and even gum line, and adding a protective band of firm tissue around the tooth. Treating recession is as much about long-term dental health as it is about aesthetics.

There are two main ways to restore the tissue. The traditional approach uses a small amount of your own connective tissue, usually taken from the palate, and grafts it over the recession. The modern alternative uses a regenerative collagen matrix such as Botiss Mucoderm, which acts as a scaffold for your own cells to grow into - in suitable cases this avoids a second surgical site on the palate, often meaning less discomfort and a more comfortable recovery.
