A collagen membrane is the thin, resorbable barrier we lay over a bone graft to guide regeneration - holding the graft in place and keeping fast-growing gum tissue out while new bone forms underneath.

A collagen membrane is the quiet workhorse of guided bone regeneration (GBR). When a graft is placed to rebuild lost jawbone, gum tissue heals far faster than bone - and left unchecked it would grow down into the graft and crowd out the very bone we are trying to create. The membrane solves this elegantly: it sits over the graft as a protective layer that keeps soft tissue on one side and gives the slower-growing bone the space and time it needs to mature properly underneath. It is the difference between hoping a graft works and knowing the site is set up to regenerate predictably.

Because the membrane is fully resorbable, your body breaks it down naturally over the following weeks as new bone forms, so there is no second surgery to remove it. Beyond simply protecting the graft, a well-placed membrane helps contain and shape the ridge, encouraging a fuller, more even contour - which means a more stable foundation and a more natural-looking result once your implant and crown are in place.
